The purpose of applying a tourniquet is primarily to stop severe bleeding. When a person suffers a traumatic injury that results in significant hemorrhage, especially from a limb, a tourniquet can be life-saving by occluding blood flow to the affected area. While immobilizing a limb, relieving pain, and stabilizing a fracture are important aspects of trauma care, they do not address the immediate and life-threatening concern of controlling severe external bleeding.
